RE:Community -Edition Two

Re:Community is a space to learn, unlearn, and relearn all such things and take baby steps towards building sustainable communities that respect Earth's limited resources

Quest to build a community to raise the sustainability quotient – ours and our planet’s.

At the second edition of Re:Community on June 2, 2024, twenty-two repair enthusiasts gathered to witness the strength of community, curiosity, and fun, all much needed elements that nourish us on the path of sustainable living.

It was fulfilling to see every participant trying to fix things together rather than simply discarding them. At the repair table this time, we had a 15-year-old transistor, a couple of electronic toys, a camphor vaporiser, a sandwich grill, LED tube lights, a car-seat cushion rest, a couple of computer mice, a Bluetooth speaker, a quartz watch, and a broken fairy light. Another sustainability enthusiast brought out a cloth for repairing.

Under the guidance of our facilitator and repair mentors, Trilok Pandya (72) and Manoj Kapadia (79), participants of diverse age groups were able to repair the watch and got a 15-year-old transistor working again. Yay!!

We also opened and inspected LED lights and identified that the drivers had shorted resistors or capacitors. Young learners managed to repair a camphor vaporiser they brought. Two electronic toys could not be repaired, but they will again be up for fixing next time.

We were able to open the Bluetooth speaker, just to realize that some of the equipment had been made in a way that it is very challenging to open them without damaging them. Additionally, the Li-ion battery in the speaker didn’t have any label indicating the specification of battery, so even if we want to replace it, there is no easy way!! But we will find a way nonetheless 🙂

The images in the collage sum up what we want to create through this programme. A community of sustainability champions. Our hearts are gladdened when we see diverse age groups working together on what is seemigly a fun repair task, but in the process, they are getting attuned to the larger challenges and becoming sustainability champions or rather sustainability becoming a part of them. We hope this sustains 🙂
